Solomon Schechter

Troop 54 is the vibrant and exciting boy scout troop chartered by the South Area Solomon Schechter Day School in Norwood. The Troop's weekly meetings, held Sunday evenings at the South Area Solomon Schechter Day School, in Norwood, are an opportunity for boys ages 10 1/2 to 18 to learn AND have fun.  Participating scouts plan and enjoy day hikes and overnight camping trips around the Boston area and beyond.  Scouting allows older boys to develop important leadership skills by teaching the younger boys an array of Scout skills, including outdoor survival skills, first aid and safety, service to others, and citizenship in their own participatory democracy.  All boys develop greater self-reliance, self-discipline, self-confidence, and self-respect. Troop members acquire the skills needed to advance on the trail to Eagle Scout, the highest rank within Boy Scouts. Scouts enjoy learning skills and earning Merit Badges, which allow them to advance rank. Merit badges can be earned in many areas, including:

Archery, Rifle or Shotgun Shooting, Indian Lore, Swimming, Snorkeling, Lifesaving, Canoeing, Whitewater Canoeing, Small Boat Sailing, Rowing, Athletics, Pioneering, Astronomy, Camping, Cooking, Hiking, Horsemanship, Leatherwork, Basketry, Woodcarving, Nature, Bird Study, Mammal Study, Reptile & Amphibian Study, Fishing, Botany, Forestry, Soil & Water Conservation, Environmental Science, Rock Climbing, Rappelling, Mountain Biking, Wilderness Survival and many more.

This Troop is unique in the Boston Area in allowing Jewish boys to participate fully in the whole Scouting program while continuing to observe all aspects of their religious heritage.

For our older Scouts, ages 13 to 18, Troop 54 facilitates participation in a week-long Junior Leadership Training Course as well as multi-week experiences at National Scout Jamborees and High-Adventure Treks such as: Canoeing and Hiking in the Adirondacks, Horseback Riding in the Colorado Rockies, Winter Camping in New Hampshire, an American Heritage & Oceanography Trek on the land and sea around Massachusetts, or a Wilderness Backpacking Trek on the 137,000 acre Philmont Scout Ranch near Cimmaron, New Mexico.
Our Scouts gain an appreciation of the natural world and their place within it; they also develop a uniquely personal appreciation of the their Jewish heritage and its place in their world.
